Academic Issues

Rewarding Excellence

When students reach high levels of academic achievement, they are honored with a place on the Dean’s List or the Director’s Circle.

The Director’s Circle honors first-year students who have a 3.5 grade point average or better.  Parents and family members are invited to a recognition ceremony in early February

Dean's List students have a record for a full-time semester schedule, a quality point average of at least 3.5, and no grade lower than a C. Students will be informed by email if they are named to the Dean’s List. The University does not distribute news releases for this achievement.

Promoting Academic Integrity

The Duquesne community is dedicated to the highest moral and ethical principles. Therefore students seek knowledge in an honest manner, upholding academic integrity in completing class assignments, examinations, and any other requirements related to their courses of study.

Students will be held responsible for maintaining academic integrity. Complete policies on all academic issues can be found in the Student Handbook.

Helping Students Cope

For some students, college class work is very different from high school. It is not unusual to feel overwhelmed. Duquesne provides many sources for academic assistance.

Students can view their mid-term grades on the DORI portal (access restricted to students).

The Office of Freshman Development & Special Student Services (412.396.6657) will contact any freshman who received a D or F at midterms. A written copy of this report is sent to their advisor and to the students at their campus residence or home address.

Any student who needs assistance should:

  • Speak with his/her instructor to communicate the difficulty, and to learn if there is any assistance available at the departmental level.
  • Ask an Academic Advisor for assistance.
  • Contact the Learning Skills Center, 412.396.6661, for academic support and/or tutoring.
  • Contact the Writing Center, 412.396.5209, for help with writing.

Letting Families Know
Parents/Families are always welcome to contact their student’s Academic Advisor for general information regarding schedules or curriculum. However, privacy regulations require that students must sign a waiver form to allow University personnel to communicate with a parent or guardian regarding their academic performance.
