Internships

The McAnulty College of Liberal Arts provides internship opportunities for its students both directly and in partnership with other organizations. The College awards credit for internships sponsored by departments in the College and internships arranged through partners in Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and London, England.

"Technical skills are best learned . . . in the workplace, but this can be seen as an adjunct to the school and as part of education, to be monitored and arranged by the school. The work of society, and the values and norms of the world around us are also best learned by working in and with the surrounding community, on assignments and placements arranged by the school. . . . We learn by reflecting on what has happened. . . . there can be schools in unlikely places, places which we never thought of as schools before."

Handy, Charles. 1989. "A Proper Education." Change September/October:18-19.

Students must have earned 60 credits and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5 to qualify for an internship, among other policies.

"Learning is enhanced by taking place in the context of a compelling situation that balances challenge and opportunity, stimulating and utilizing the brain's ability to conceptualize quickly and its capacity for contemplation and reflection upon experiences."

Joint Task Force on Student Learning. "Learning Principles and Collaborative Action." reported in Engelkemeyer, Susan West and Scott C. Brown. "Powerful Partnerships: A Shared Responsibility for Learning," AAHE Bulletin 52 (2):11.
