Historical Studies Requirements

Students have the opportunity to focus their graduate work in one of three curriculum areas:

All courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted.

American History Curriculum: 30 credits

Required Courses: 24 credits
  • Methodology: 6 credits

HIST 691: Seminar: Selected History Topics
HIST 699: Introduction to Study of Graduate History

  • Major Courses: 12 credits

Choose two  from the American period courses:

HIST 563: Early America: Colonization to Revolution
HIST 568: Sectionalism: U.S. History, 1789-1868
HIST 571: Expansion and Reform: U.S. History, 1868-1929
HIST 574: Age of Maturity: U.S. History, 1929 to the present

Choose two other American History courses (from above or below):

HIST 530: Atlantic World, 1450s-1750s
HIST 533: Gender in American History
HIST 561: African American History: Multiple Voices
HIST 565: Reform in America
HIST 570: History of Urban America
HIST 572: Work and Enterprise in American History
HIST 573: American Intellectual and Cultural History

HIST 577: Nature and the American Experience
